The start of the school year has brought many success stories, especially for the WECCSAA silver medal Cross Country team.
Cross Country
Sandwich’s cross country squad had a fantastic showing at the WECSSAA meet, finishing second overall. The senior girls led the way, winning team gold and earning 40% of the top ten spots with Leah Shannon (3rd), Alexandra Pardalis (4th), Ava Robson (6th), and Kallie Zajacz (7th). Standout individual performances included senior boy Greyson Pitcher’s gold and strong runs from junior girls Julia Carswell (6th) and Kate Renaud (9th).
Senior Football
The Varsity football team finished the regular season with a 1-4 record, their lone win a 45-14 rout of St. Anne. Special teams have been a highlight, with multiple blocked kicks and Ivan Yakubov’s punt return touchdown. The offensive line, featuring Arjun Singh, Ryan Perrone, Jorden Strickland, and Justin Wood, dominated the trenches, paving the way for four rushing touchdowns against the Saints. The Sabres now look to prove themselves against rival Villanova.
Junior Football
The junior squad started 2-2, including a thrilling 9-7 win over previously undefeated Essex on Owen Berger’s late field goal. Quarterback and returner Tucolin Downey has been a key playmaker, but MVP honors go to Sami “The Bull” Osman, who’s excelled as both running back and linebacker. The team also beat L’Essor 35-16 and is eager for playoff action.
Senior Girls Basketball
Senior girls have started strong, going 3-1, with all three wins by double digits. Leah Shannon leads the team, averaging nearly 16 points per game, highlighted by a dominant 53-22 win over Riverside. Lauren Ferasol and Annie Seagris have also made big contributions, with Ferasol scoring 17 in their biggest victory. At the season’s halfway point, the team is confident they can keep the momentum going.
Junior Girls Basketball
Junior girls finished 3-3 with two games left. Their defense has been outstanding, holding opponents to 11 points twice and allowing more than 20 in only half their games. Their three losses were all close, with just a six-point total margin. With a light schedule ahead, the team aims to secure a high playoff seed.
Senior Boys Volleyball
With two games left, the senior boys are 5-3, winning three of their last four. Eliot Sohler and Deklan Vlcek have starred, while Tyler Smith, Lucas Lanspeary, and Quinn Favaro played key supporting roles. The Sabres are in position to host a playoff game as the third seed.
Junior Boys Volleyball
The junior boys are 5-2, led by athlete of the month Timothy Penaflor. They started with three straight wins, outscoring opponents 7-2. With two games to go, they hold the third seed and are hungry for playoff success.
