Seniors from across LaSalle gathered earlier this month for the first Seniors Social, a lively day dedicated to celebrating the achievements and contributions of the community’s older adults. Hosted at the LaSalle Landing Event Centre, the LaSalle Senior Active Living Social 2025 welcomed residents aged 55 and over for a day of fun, connection, and activities.
“We are here today for our first-ever Seniors Social, as part of the LaSalle Senior Active Living program,” said Julie Turnball, supervisor of programming for the Town of LaSalle. “We were able to receive some funding through the provincial government… in which seniors are invited to drop by, network, socialize, and take part in a number of activities from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m.”
The event, with support from the town council and local sponsors, began with a warm welcome from Mayor Crystal Meloche. “Our seniors have built the foundation of LaSalle. Today, we give back a little of the appreciation they deserve,” the mayor said, setting an appreciative tone for the day.
Turnball said the event is designed to connect seniors, “As we age, we tend to move away from socializing and tend to isolate. This is a chance for seniors to feel a connection to the community, move our bodies, and engage our minds.”
Attendees enjoyed a diverse schedule of activities designed to encourage socializing and engagement, including tabletop games, puzzles, yard-style challenges, and even a friendly game of pickleball.
Silvio Civitarese, president of the LaSalle Pickleball League, said the group took part in the Seniors Social to encourage participation in physical activity. “One of the fantastic things about pickleball is its inclusiveness; you don’t have to be in top shape at a certain age to participate, just a willingness. But the socialization is the big draw to the activity.”
Dance sessions led by Cindy from Nancy Pattison Dance and Dancercise with Rana kept the energy high, while the Two Track Mind Jazz group provided live musical entertainment throughout the event. The afternoon wrapped up with a Drum Fit session led by Olivia, ensuring everyone had a chance to move and have fun.
“I’m here to teach some ballroom dancing as part of today’s social event,” said Nancy Pattison, who also teaches a number of classes monthly at the Vollmer Complex. “Any type of movement helps keep seniors active, alive, and feeling part of the community.”
A light lunch and refreshments were served, and the event’s drop-in format allowed guests to participate at their own pace. With no registration required, the event was accessible and welcoming, offering LaSalle’s seniors the opportunity to reconnect with friends, make new ones, and celebrate the vibrant, active spirit of their community.
Turnball encourages seniors to keep an eye out for the monthly social calendar provided by the Town, which lists events ranging from educational workshops to arts and crafts and classes designed to get seniors moving.
