For the third straight year, the Sandwich Sabres Track and Field squad has brought home the honour of the best in the province after accumulating more points than any other school.

Unfortunately, the OFSSA championships got off to a slow start in Ottawa with a couple of dropped batons during the senior and junior relay races.

It took the girls a little bit to bounce back the next day having to talk to them and pump them up a bit,” said Sandwich track coach Rob Moore.

He credits Jaela Bailey and Susan Adenitan for rebounding and lifting the team back up.

Adenitan won the gold medal in the 100 metre by 1/100th of a second and earned a bronze in the 200 metre race.

Ella Steel Douglas won gold in the 80 metre hurdles, silver in the 200 metre and helped the Sabres win silverin the open girls 4×400 metre relay. Ruby Radovich took silver in the 400 metre hurdles, while Anne Seagris claimed the silver in the novice girls javelin throw.

The Sabres won the overall girls title and the junior girls team title. In all, local teams brought home 28 gold medals, with eth Sabres accounting for 10 of those medals.

“I wasn’t completely sure how we were going to be this year, although we had a solid nucleus, of the 40 kids from last year, 34 returned this season,” said Moore. “We actually swept all age categories at WECSSAA this year. We moved on to SWOSSAA and we won five of six categories…giving us eight of nine titles over the last 9 years.”

The team then moved to the regionals with 67 participants, qualifying 37 squad members to OFSSAA.

Moore wishes to thank Villanova track and field coach Mike Baren for helping out the Sabre’s squad.

“This was a difficult year for us too,” explained Moore. “This year we didn’t have a track at the school. Work began on the installation of the new track in mid-April. We can’t thank the folks at Villanova enough for their assistance!”
